Button battery injuries in children have been increasingly severe-resulting in devastating injuries and even death. Button batteries damage esophageal tissue through isothermic hydrolysis reactions, resulting in alkaline caustic injury, which leads to tissue necrosis.
In an article published online by Frontiers in Endocrinology, researchers at the Medical University of South Carolina report that they have identified a potential therapeutic target for lung fibrosis or scarring.
Cleveland Clinic, the City of East Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, and a collection of local health and social service agencies are launching the East Cleveland Teen Collaborative, a partnership focused on reducing health disparities and improving health outcomes of East Cleveland youth.
The first clinical trial to investigate whether treatment with a statin drug can reduce the increased cardiovascular disease risk in people infected with HIV has begun enrolling patients. Based at Massachusetts General Hospital, the six-year, $40 million REPRIEVE (Randomized Study to Prevent Vascular Events in HIV) trial will be conducted at around 100 sites in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico and Thailand with funding from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute in collaboration with the AIDS Clinical Trials Group and support from the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
A multicenter registry has demonstrated that the use of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) to combat sudden cardiac death in high-risk pediatric patients suffering from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). The study is being presented Nov. 5 at the 2012 Scientific Sessions of the American Heart Association (AHA) in Los Angeles.
