Previous studies linking older age with kidney and heart disease have raised concerns about the safety of living kidney donation among older adults.
Hormone concentrations during early fetal development - that may affect the child's development and increase the mother's risk for breast and ovarian cancer years later - are significantly affected by maternal age, body mass index and race rather than lifestyle, according to a Rutgers study.
For 50 years scientists have been unsure how the bacteria that gives humans cholera manages to resist one of our basic innate immune responses. That mystery has now been solved, thanks to research from biologists at The University of Texas at Austin.
Long segments of RNA- encoded in our DNA but not translated into protein-are key to physically manipulating DNA in order to activate certain genes, say researchers at The Wistar Institute. These non-coding RNA-activators (ncRNA-a) have a crucial role in turning genes on and off during early embryonic development, researchers say, and have also been connected with diseases, including some cancers, in adults.
In a world-first breakthrough, University of New South Wales (UNSW) medical researchers have used stem cells cultured on a simple contact lens to restore sight to sufferers of blinding corneal disease.
