Researchers at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine took a step closer to understanding the basis of a severe epilepsy and mental retardation syndrome with work published in the January 5, 2006 issue of the journal Neuron.

Patients who have to undergo dialysis see their lives inevitably affected by the treatment. Despite medical advances, the quality of life perceived by these kidney patients has improved very little, although it varies from person to person. Basing this as her starting point, Dr Begoña Ruiz de Alegría studied the emotional progress of patients treated with dialysis (hospitalised haemodialysis treatment and domiciliary peritoneal dialysis) in the Basque Country Autonomous Community.
In comments sent to Secretary Kathleen Sebelius at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, AMIA (American Medical Informatics Association) called out 10 specific challenges to proposed modifications to HIPAA Privacy and Enforcement Rules. AMIA's comments, sent on behalf of its membership of 4,000 informatics professionals, detail key issues of concern related to the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) on HIPAA modifications, along with suggestions for models of change.
