A new study by five doctoral students in neuroscience at the University of Minnesota Medical School calls attention to a lack of regulation and unknown long-term health effects of tear gas. Based on their research, the group recommends changing the protocols around the use of tear gas as a crowd control measure at both the local and national level.
The Washington Post on Friday examined how, although the health care industry in the last 15 last years has "pumped out 4.5 million new jobs" and currently employs 16.5 million U.S. residents, the "nation is still figuring out how to pay for it" (Marr, Washington Post, 6/13).
Research may help physicians give patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty a realistic expectation of surgery outcome based on their overall physical and mental health, US researchers believe.
Children with chronic health conditions such as cystic fibrosis, type 1 diabetes, sickle cell diseases and cerebral palsy represent less than two percent of the population but can consume more than 50 percent of resources at children's hospitals throughout the country. Coordinating care for these children has historically been difficult because hospitals have varying methods to identify them in their systems.
Sinai Hospital has begun use of a new device that provides timely live-saving treatment for acute stroke patients. The Solitaire FR revascularization device is designed to minimize damage caused by blockage of an artery to the brain by mechanically removing blood clots and restoring blood flow.
