To monitor the real-time performance of bone implants is the challenge of "Smart Hip", an innovative medical device that aims to reduce the number of surgical interventions in the hip area and regenerate bone tissue by using non-evasive methods. The concept's validation - unique in the world and developed by a PHD from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto -, has already been successfully tested on animals.
The risk of dying from heart disease, chronic lung disease or diabetes in adulthood is twice as high for preemies —premature infants — as for the general population.
Not only do statins extend lives by lowering cholesterol levels and reducing the risks of cardiovascular disease, but new research in the September 2013 issue of The FASEB Journal suggests that they may extend lifespans as well. Specifically, statins may reduce the rate at which telomeres shorten, a key factor in the natural aging process. This opens the door for using statins, or derivatives of statins, as an anti-aging therapy.
Although calcium usually gets top billing when it comes to bone health, fruits and vegetables may also promote stronger bones in girls, new study findings suggest.
Heather Wakelee, MD, is the recipient of the 2015 ECOG-ACRIN Young Investigator Award, the ECOG-ACRIN Cancer Research Group announced today. Dr. Wakelee is associate professor of medicine in the Division of Oncology at the Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, Calif.
