A decade after the conclusion of a schistosomiasis control program in Mali, prevalence of the disease had regressed to pre-intervention levels, according to a study published May 5 in the open-access journal PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases.
According to lead researcher in the field of ecotoxicology, human medicines that end up in the ecosystem are causing mutations in the male fish that mutate them into females. Professor Charles Tyler, fish physiologist and eco-toxicologist from Exeter University, has warned that more and more scientists should work on the exact impact of these drugs and chemicals on nature and marine animals.
A new $21-million grant will help researchers at the University of Michigan Health System better understand the HIV virus on a molecular level, potentially paving the way for new treatment approaches to AIDS and other diseases.
Two simple tests conducted during the neurological exam can help clinicians differentiate between early-stage Parkinson's disease (PD) and atypical parkinsonism. By asking patients to perform a tandem gait test and inquiring whether they are still able to ride a bicycle, clinicians can ascertain whether medio-lateral balance is impaired, a defining characteristic of atypical parkinsonism.
