Over the past three decades, the rising obesity epidemic has been accompanied by a proliferation of weight-loss plans. However, as a new study by researchers from the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) reveals, these weight-loss plans vary significantly in their ability to positively affect heart health.
Research and development (R&D) project, AfriCoLeish, is supported by the European Union Seventh Framework Programme (EU FP7) through a grant of -3 million. The project will run for three years and aims to test new treatments for kala-azar (visceral leishmaniasis, or VL) and co-infection of the disease with HIV in Ethiopia and Sudan.
Decision Resources, one of the world's leading research and advisory firms for pharmaceutical and healthcare issues, finds that, in the U.S. and Europe, a drug that resolves tophi in less than one year would become the patient share leader in the chronic tophaceous gout patient subpopulation and would be used in the vast majority of patients who suffer severe tophaceous gout, according to surveyed U.S. and European rheumatologists.
Even black-diamond skiers and snowboarders enjoying a weekend on the slopes can have their season spoiled by an injury that happens on the last run of the day. But the end-of-the-day tweaks and spills are more common than you'd think, says physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist Ed Laskowski, M.D., of Mayo Clinic.
