Shire plc, the global specialty biopharmaceutical company, today announced top-line results of the PREVENT2 trial, a phase 3 investigational study of once-daily SPD476, MMX mesalamine in patients with a history of diverticulitis.
Autism affects 1 in 150 children today, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Despite its widespread effect, autism is not well understood and there are no objective medical tests to diagnose it. Recently, University of Missouri researchers have developed a pupil response test that is 92.5 percent accurate in separating children with autism from those with typical development. In the study, MU scientists found that children with autism have slower pupil responses to light change.
It is a staple of science fiction to mock sutures as outdated. The technique has, after all, been in use for at least 5,000 years. Surely medicine should have advanced since ancient Egypt.
The Endocrine Society warned that the President's proposal to slash $7.16 billion, or more than a fifth, of the National Institutes of Health's budget, and $1.2 billion from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would hinder progress toward needed medical treatments and advances in public health and disease prevention.
Cancer treatment isn't just a matter of shrinking or removing a tumor. It also involves preserving or improving the patient's quality of life.
