The University of York's Department of Health Sciences and NHS Leeds Community Healthcare have been awarded a £1.75m grant from the National Institute for Health Research to carry out a study into complex wounds.
The levels of an inflammatory chemokine were significantly elevated in patients with pancreatic cancer who were extremely obese, according to research conducted by scientists at the Jefferson Pancreatic, Biliary and Related Cancers Center. They presented their data at the 5th Annual Academic Surgical Congress, held in San Antonio.
Cancer is caused by an accumulation of genetic changes in a cell, that overcome the normal checks and balances leading to uncontrolled growth. A complex, interacting network of proteins controls all of a cell's processes, from metabolism to growth and division.
Patients diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have a significantly higher risk of developing insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, placing them at greater risk for heart disease and diabetes, according to research being presented at the American College of Cardiology's 62nd Annual Scientific Session. Researchers say public health interventions are urgently needed to prevent PTSD-related metabolic disorder at its early, reversible stage.
American Frozen Food Institute (AFFI) President and CEO Kraig R. Naasz today commended the U.S. House of Representatives for approving the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, which now heads to President Obama for his signature and enactment after having passed the Senate in August.
