Parkinson's Disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder. In Germany alone, almost half a million people are affected. The focus of the disease is the progressive degeneration of dopamine-producing nerve cells in a certain region of the midbrain, the substantia nigra. Misfolded proteins are the cause. Until recently, it was unclear why damage is confined to specific nerve cells.
Jesse Mez, MD, MS, assistant professor of neurology at Boston University School of Medicine, has received a three-year, $1.2 million grant from the United States Department of Defense to study the impact of traumatic brain injury and military service on Alzheimer's disease and related disorders.
A combination of several well-known safety procedures could greatly reduce patient-harming errors in the use of radiation to treat cancer, according to a new study led by Johns Hopkins researchers.
