In an international clinical trial, a new drug that selectively blocks immune responses has proved as effective in preventing acute kidney transplant rejection as cyclosporine, the standard anti-rejection treatment.
Boston Medical Center (BMC) has been approved to receive two research awards from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). One will study the delivery of cancer care to patients who face socio-legal barriers and the other will test the effectiveness of integrative medical group visits (IMGV) for treating chronic pain.
A national poll from the University of Utah's Huntsman Cancer Institute shows 34 percent of respondents would not seek genetic testing to predict their likelihood of developing a hereditary cancer - even if the cost of the testing was not an issue.
With rise of incidence of flu this winter emergency stocks of the vaccine are being released. A review is to be carried out into whether vaccines should be purchased centrally next year in order to avoid shortages. At present the GPs can procure the jabs directly from manufacturers according to their estimates of patient requirement.
