The Zilver PTX Drug-Eluting Stent, the first device of its kind developed to treat peripheral artery disease (PAD) in the superficial femoral artery (SFA), has received a unanimous recommendation from the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Circulatory System Devices Panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Committee, Cook Medical announced today.
Surgeons in the UK have successfully kept a human heart alive and beating outside the body, before it was transplanted into a patient.
Many types of leukemia are caused by loss of enzymes such as Pten, which normally keeps cell growth in check, or conversely, the over-activation of enzymes that normally enhance cell proliferation, such as Shp2.
Engineers and researchers at the University of California, Berkeley have developed a neurostimulator that can act as a pacemaker within the human brain.
Last week, the federal government revealed that it will fine more than 2,600 hospitals in the coming year, because too many Medicare patients treated at these hospitals are ending up back in the hospital within 30 days of going home. Two new conditions have been added in this round of penalties: elective hip and knee replacement and chronic lung disease.
