St. Jude Medical, Inc., a global medical device company, today announced European CE Mark approval of its new Epiducer™ lead delivery system for neurostimulation therapy. Unveiled at the Neurosurgery 2010 Congress in Lyon, France, the Epiducer lead delivery system is the first of its kind, allowing introduction of S-Series perc-paddle leads as well as multiple lead arrays through a single percutaneous entry point.
The widely used cancer drug bevacizumab may cause severe loss of protein from the kidney into the urine that can lead to significant kidney damage and can compromise the efficacy of cancer treatment, according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. The results suggest that physicians should monitor patients' kidney health when prescribing this angiogenesis inhibitor.
Various human implantable medical devices have been developed in recent years, and they are being used in clinical filed. These devices include brain–machine interfaces, in which a chip is implanted into the brain to enable humans to move machines using only their thoughts, and deep brain stimulators for treating Parkinson's disease and other brain diseases.
This December marks the 40th anniversary of the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania being designated a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute. To celebrate this momentous milestone, over 400 people gathered together early this month for an event recognizing the center's vast achievements in cancer research, patient care, and education during the last four decades.
Semtech Corporation, a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors, today announced it will contribute $25,000 to the UCLA Hospital System toward the development of a new treatment center at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center for teen and young adult cancer patients.
