MIT engineers have developed a fuel cell that runs on the same sugar that powers human cells: glucose. This glucose fuel cell could be used to drive highly efficient brain implants of the future, which could help paralyzed patients move their arms and legs again.
Sanofi launches a new probiotic supplement for kids in South Korea. Released, in Costco stores under the global Cenovis Kids brand, the new supplement with a delicious vanilla flavor and teddy bear shape is produced by Anlit Ltd., Israel, and designed specifically for kids.
In the latest observational study sponsored by the American Society for Microbiology and the American Cleaning Institute- (formerly The Soap and Detergent Association), 85% of adults washed their hands in public restrooms, compared with 77% in 2007. The 85% total was actually the highest observed since these studies began in 1996. The results were announced at the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, an infectious disease meeting sponsored by the American Society for Microbiology.
"Thousands of women in India are being given hysterectomies and caesareans that they do not need by doctors and hospitals that can make substantial sums of money out of the operations," Guardian health editor Sarah Boseley reports in her "Global Health Blog."
