A Washington Post investigation has found that the city with the highest AIDS rate in the United States, Washington, D.C., has awarded millions of dollars to often ineffective groups with little oversight. Officials failed to act when information about waste and abuse became available, and in the worst case one may have helped channel funding to relatives who operated an AIDS charity out of their nightclub. Meanwhile, AIDS patients waited years for treatment, faced needs legitimate agencies were unable to meet, and in one case, died alone on a park bench within a couple of miles of a dozen nonprofits meant to care for AIDS patients (Cenziper, 10/18).
A bill that would allow state officials to reject rate increases proposed by health insurers is under intense lobbying pressure as it faces a key committee vote this week. Groups representing insurers, doctors and hospitals are trying to have the California bill weakened or killed, although for different reasons.
Medical University of South Carolina neurologists have developed a new method based on artificial intelligence that may eventually help both patients and doctors weigh the pros and cons of using brain surgery to treat debilitating seizures caused by epilepsy.
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston named Dr. Kevin Tabb president and CEO of the 621-bed hospital, effective Oct. 17. Tabb, 47, currently is CMO at Stanford Hospital & Clinics, a 477-bed hospital in Palo Alto, Calif., according to news release from BIDMC. He previously was Stanford Hospital's chief quality and medical information officer. Earlier in his career, he was president of clinical data services for GE Healthcare Information Technologies.
