If a patient is no longer able to communicate personally how he or she would like to be treated, doctors and relatives consult an advance directive, if one is available. However, doctors and relatives often interpret patients' written wishes in different ways, as Nadja Leder et al. establish in their original article in the current issue of Deutsches Ärzteblatt International (Dtsch Arztbl Int 112: 723-9).
Emotional crying is a universal, uniquely human behavior. When we cry, we clearly send all sorts of emotional signals. In a paper published online today in Science Express, scientists at the Weizmann Institute have demonstrated that some of these signals are chemically encoded in the tears themselves. Specifically, they found that merely sniffing a woman's tears - even when the crying woman is not present - reduces sexual arousal in men.
People who swim, bathe or take part in water sports in the sea are substantially more likely to experience stomach bugs, earaches and other types of illness than those who do not.
Patients undergoing long-term dialysis, especially Black and Hispanic patients and those living in nursing homes, were severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a nationwide study by University of Michigan researchers.
