The Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care has published new recommendations that rule out the need to do a thyroid screening test "just because" if the patient doesn't have symptoms of thyroid abnormality, is an adult, isn't pregnant, and has no risk factors for thyroid disease. This should put to rest any doubts that thyroid screening is a part of a routine check-up.
Nearly 90 percent of medical journals with relatively high impact factors have policies addressing author conflict of interest (COI) available for public review, according to a report in the November 25 issue of JAMA. But many journals do not require authors to sign disclosure statements, and there is variability in how COI is defined.
Chemists at the University of California San Diego have designed a set of molecules that promote microscopic, anatomical changes in neurons associated with the formation and retention of memories. These drug candidates also prevent deterioration of the same neuronal structures in the presence of amyloid-beta, a protein fragment that accumulates in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease.
