BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced positive GVAX AML Vaccine results and BioSante's receipt of Orphan Drug designation from the FDA's Office of Orphan Products Development for GVAX AML Vaccine in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia. This Orphan Drug designation is the second GVAX cancer vaccine from BioSante to secure FDA orphan drug designation.
A study published in the March 16 issue of Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) suggesting that a "daily-dose" of vitamin E (400 international units) among high-risk (chronically ill) cardiovascular patient populations is associated with a greater risk of heart failure is being challenged by leading health researchers around the country who claim the study lacks the adequate research and controlled sampling audience to justify this conclusion.
Growth of colorectal cancer cells can be inhibited with the odorant troenan. This is reported by the research team headed by Prof Dr Dr Dr habil. Hanns Hatt and Dr Lea Weber from Ruhr-Universität Bochum in the journal "PLOS One".
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) will sponsor a series of events from April 23 to 29 aimed at increasing awareness of the devastating impact of traffic crashes in the Americas. The events will be held both at PAHO headquarters in Washington, D.C., and in member countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Major insurers plan to discontinue child-only health plans rather than issue coverage under such plans for children with preexisting conditions, something they would have to do beginning Sept. 23 as part of the health law, The Washington Post reports. WellPoint, Cigna and CoventryOne are among the insurers that will end the plans. Those children already covered under the plans would be able to continue, and the companies "will accept children with preexisting conditions in new family policies" (Aizenman, 9/20).
