What started as an experiment to probe brain circuits involved in compulsive behavior has revealed a surprising connection with obesity.
A team of researchers led by Samir Mehta, MD, chief of the Orthopaedic Trauma & Fracture Service at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, has received a $2.5 million grant from the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP), provided through the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), to begin Phase 2 human trials of a study that examines the effective treatment of post-surgical orthopedic infections using Microbion Corporation's topical BisEDT drug.
Israeli and American researchers have identified new genetic data that could be used in the future to predict who will develop end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). ESKD requires dialysis or transplantation to sustain life, and is fatal in most regions of the world, where these treatments are not available.
Calling it a "dubious privatization venture," a Baton Rouge good-government group last week questioned Gov. Bobby Jindal's plan to turn over large chunks of the state Medicaid program to private insurers and praised the Louisiana House of Representatives for trying to slow the process.
Researchers at the University of Chicago have found that a recently discovered biological process known as sumoylation - until now thought to be active only in the nucleus - also occurs near the cell's surface where it regulates at least one and possibly many kinds of proteins, providing a novel target for the development of new drugs.
