As the war on HIV/AIDS begins its fourth decade, medical researchers, pharmaceutical manufacturers, patient advocates and government regulators face a new and unexpected scientific challenge: how to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of promising new antiretroviral drugs when the two traditional study designs – the superiority trial and the non-inferiority trial – are no longer useful in showing improvements in both "treatment experienced" patients and those who have never received drug therapy (treatment-naive patients).
When patients need a bone graft for a foot or ankle surgery, bone often is taken from another part of their body. Now surgeons are using new methods to get bone material and even stem cells right "off the shelf," according to Glenn M. Weinraub, DPM, FACFAS, a California foot and ankle surgeon who is leading a discussion among surgeons on the next decade of bone healing at the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons' Annual Scientific Conference in Fort Lauderdale.
The proportion of U.S. adults who self report they are obese increased nearly 2 percent between 2005 and 2007, according to a report in today's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). An estimated 25.6 percent of U.S. adults reported being obese in 2007 compared to 23.9 percent in 2005, an increase of 1.7 percent.
While considered a delicacy in some parts of the world, snails have found a more intriguing use to scientists and the medical profession offering a plethora of research possibilities. Cone snails are marine mollusks, just as conch, octopi and squid, but they capture their prey using venom.
The Los Angeles Society of Pathologists, Inc. presented its Lifetime Achievement Award to Samuel W. French, MD, a principal investigator at Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, on Jan. 15.
