Brain cancer is among the deadliest of cancers. It's also one of the hardest to treat. Imaging results are often imprecise because brain cancers are extremely invasive. Setting the stage for another legislative battle that puts mental health patients in the middle, a bill seeking to give licensed psychologists prescribing privileges for dangerous medications is scheduled to be heard on April 23, 2007 in the Senate Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee.
Austin-based On-X® Life Technologies, Inc., manufacturers of the On-X® Prosthetic Heart Valve, announced today that it has entered into an exclusive worldwide license with the Cleveland Clinic for a system of products intended to improve and simplify the replacement of damaged or severed mitral valve chordae.
Ongoing ethnic tension and sectarian violence in areas of western Myanmar are preventing Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) from delivering medical care in the region, the group said on Monday, the New York Times reports. The group "reported that many of its local staff members were afraid to work at refugee camps and medical centers in Rakhine State, where people wounded in clashes need treatment for wounds from guns, knives, arrows and other weapons," the newspaper writes.
Noncommunicable diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes, are the leading cause of death around the world. NCDs already account for over 70 percent of deaths, with this percentage only expected to increase in the coming years.
