Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced positive top-line results from a Phase 2 study evaluating the safety and efficacy of ISIS 113715 in patients with type 2 diabetes. ISIS 113715 is a novel insulin sensitizer that reduces the expression of protein tyrosine phosphatase-1B (PTP-1B). The study showed consistent and statistically significant reductions in multiple short and intermediate measures of glucose control.
Reducing the amount of protein in the urine of patients with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), a rare disease in which scar tissue forms on the parts of the kidneys that filter waste from the blood, can significantly slow declines in kidney function and extend time before patients' kidneys fail, a new analysis by a Children's National Hospital researcher and her colleagues shows.
The Endocrine Society warned that the President's proposal to slash $7.16 billion, or more than a fifth, of the National Institutes of Health's budget, and $1.2 billion from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would hinder progress toward needed medical treatments and advances in public health and disease prevention.
Spectrum Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a commercial stage biotechnology company with a primary focus in oncology, and Handok Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd., a fully integrated Korean pharmaceutical company, today announced a collaboration for the development and commercialization of apaziquone in South Korea. Apaziquone is an antineoplastic agent currently being investigated for the treatment of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer by intravesical instillation.
