A kidney condition that can arise in children and was until recently believed to disappear after puberty may persist into adulthood and cause significant long-term complications, according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Clinical Journal of the American Society Nephrology (CJASN). The findings indicate that better treatment options are needed for children with the disorder, called minimal change nephrotic syndrome.
Recent advances in immunotherapy have allowed doctors at the University of Colorado Cancer Center to more effectively treat melanomas that spread to other parts of the body. Immunotherapy drugs such as checkpoint inhibitors, which are commonly used to treat melanomas, work to strengthen a patient's immune system so that it can prevent a tumor from "turning off" the ability of the immune system to fight it.
Experts have confirmed it: tics are not a rare or uncommon disorder. It is the second study to be conducted in Spain to date, and the first of great importance, revealing that the prevalence of these motor disorders in the child population is 16.86%. The incidence is greater in boys than girls, and they tend to disappear or reduce with age.
Demonstrating the value of standards-based health information technologies, MedQuist Inc., a leading provider of technology-enabled clinical documentation services, is participating as an Implementer in the HIMSS10 Interoperability Showcase at booth #233 in Hall C of the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia. The Showcase is part of the 2010 Annual Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Conference & Exhibition being held from March 1-4.
As more patients from underserved populations start to enter the health care system through health care reform, there will be an increasing need to have more African-American and Latino physicians to help provide quality health care. Kaiser Permanente is working to address the shortage of physicians by expanding its relationship with National Medical Fellowships and contributing $1 million to support medical students through education and training programs.
