DSM Biomedical, a global leader in biomedical materials science, today announced a major step forward in the development of a new polyethylene polymer platform intended to improve the mechanical properties and long-term stability of hip and knee implants.
Chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) encompasses Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and indeterminate colitis. The distinct phenotype in pediatric and adolescent patients and the difference from adult IBD make early-onset IBD a unique subgroup requiring specific therapeutic considerations. In this book, leading experts from the USA, Europe and Israel present new data on the genetics, epidemiology, pathology and pathogenesis of pediatric IBD. Imaging and endoscopy in the diagnosis of IBD are also discussed.
People who have trouble sleeping in noisy environments often resort to strategies like earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones that muffle the sound, but a new study from investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) may lead to ways to block disturbing sounds within the brain. In their report in the August 10 issue of Current Biology, the team reports finding a brain-wave pattern, reflecting activity of a key structure, that predicts the ease at which sleep can be disrupted by noise.
"At first glance, the new Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan sounds like welcome relief for jobless Illinoisans who have serious medical issues and are struggling with the loss of employer financed health care. The federally financed $5 billion plan $196 million of which is earmarked for Illinois provides an affordable health insurance option to people who previously were limited to the far more expensive, state run Illinois Comprehensive Health Insurance Plan.
The increasing distrust in vaccinations has triggered an extensive scientific and public debate over whether or not it is useful, safe and ethical to vaccinate children today.
