A new study showed that there are significant differences in the MHC class II antigens on the insulin peptide that is deficient in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). These determine the response of the T cells to the insulin peptide that causes destruction of insulin.
In an editorial in the current issue of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), William E. Boden, M.D., professor of medicine and preventive medicine at the University at Buffalo, recommends that the results of the BARI-2D Trial published in that edition must be interpreted with "considerable caution."
In an attempt to address the anticipated primary care physician shortage, more and more medical schools are starting to recognize the correlation between an applicant's level of community service and the likelihood that candidate will pursue a career in underserved areas of medicine. As a result, volunteerism is expected to emerge as a critical component of an effective application in this year's admissions cycle, according to medical school admissions consulting firm Veritas Prep.
A Johns Hopkins study of adult patients admitted to The Johns Hopkins Hospital showed that patients who resided in nursing homes or other kinds of long-term care facilities at any time within the last six months were far more likely than other adult patients to carry or be infected with a drug-resistant superbug.
