The use of Sleep Restriction Therapy to help treat adults with insomnia is under-recognized – despite encouraging results since it was first introduced in the late 1980s.
Melanoma patients who receive treatment with targeted therapies experience an initial response that feels like a cure, but that early excitement is quickly dampened when patients relapse as their cancers find alternative pathways in our cells to grow and spread. With melanoma so good at escaping targeted treatments, there's a dire need to halt these cancers in their tracks to prolong good responses and promote longer, healthier lives.
The U.S. Government has proposed major changes in the rules covering research involving human subjects. Officials believe this would strengthen protections while reducing red tape that can impede studies. The experts cited vastly altered research climate as reasons for these recommendations. New features include genomics studies using patients' DNA samples, the use of the Internet and a growing reliance on studies that take place at many sites at once. The new rules cover topics like the informed consent that research participants must provide and the institutional review boards that oversee research at universities and hospitals.
A team of researchers from the Netherlands demonstrated that prophylactic treatment with a high dose of human convalescent plasma or by using concentrated monoclonal antibodies could protect against disease following severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in an animal model. However, no protective effect was observed with a ten-fold lower dose of convalescent plasma. The results are currently available on the bioRxiv* preprint server.
