When someone breaks a bone in their lower leg, the fracture can often be complex, making the healing process lengthy and involved. In these cases, it is usual for the fractured bone to be surgically stabilized using an orthopedic implant.
Conventional wisdom holds that the more people stay within their own social groups and avoid others, the less likely a small disease outbreak will turn into full-blown epidemic. But this conventional wisdom might be quite wrong, according to two Santa Fe Institute researchers, and the consequences could reach far beyond epidemiology.
The Ontario Long Term Care Association (OLTCA) appreciates that today's provincial budget contains measures to support long term care homes in maintaining care and service levels to over 76,000 of Ontario's oldest and frailest citizens. The association is also looking forward to the opportunity for continued discussions with government to attempt to resolve outstanding questions to further protect the capacity of homes to provide the care and services residents need.
A team from the Centre for Automation and Robotics (CAR, UPM-CSIC) has developed a robotic exoskeleton that performs more efficiently rehabilitation therapies of patients with shoulder injuries. By using strength and motion sensors, the system assesses the degree of an injury and its evolution as the treatment progresses.
Approximately 1 in every 4 deaths in the United States is caused by heart disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
