A study published July 11th in the open-access journal PLoS Pathogens suggests that herpesviruses use multiple strategies to manipulate important components of the host cell nuclear environment during infection.
Pregnant women should avoid taking vitamin D supplements. Substitution appears to raise the risk of children developing a food allergy after birth.
After looking at the health records of over 10,000 patients with both HIV and multidrug resistant Tuberculosis (TB) in over 20 different countries, researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, McGill University, and other institutions around the world, found that implementing antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV and newer tuberculosis medications decreased the risk of death for adults with drug-resistant TB.
By giving ordinary adult mice a drug - a synthetic designed to mimic fat - Salk Institute scientist Dr. Ronald M. Evans is now able to chemically switch on PPAR-d, the master regulator that controls the ability of cells to burn fat.
