In this post in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's "Impatient Optimists" blog, Gary Darmstadt, head of the Family Health Division of the foundation, Wendy Prosser, a research analyst with the Family Health Division, and Damian Walker, a senior program officer at the foundation, examine efforts to stop the transmission of syphilis from mother to child during labor and delivery.
Children who choke when they drink or eat may have what's known as dysphagia, or a swallowing disorder - one of the most common medical complaints seen in young children.
A new test for urothelial cancers could detect mutations in DNA that have been identified for those cancers earlier than traditional tests. The earlier detection of urothelial cancer could lead to earlier treatment, and potentially better outcomes for patients.
The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Mu variant (B.1.621, B.1.621.1) has been tagged as a Variant Being Monitored (VBM), and as of August 30, 2021, it had been detected in 39 countries.
Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) bacteria are responsible each year for around 400 million cases of diarrhoea and 400,000 deaths in the world's low- and middle-income countries. Children under the age of five are most affected.
