A minimally-invasive treatment just became available to men suffering from prostate cancer in the United States. After more than 10 years of clinical trials, the Food and Drug Administration on October 9 approved the use of High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), a procedure that can zero in on cancer cells while protecting surrounding tissue and minimizing chances for erectile and urinary dysfunction associated with other treatments.
High-dose vitamin D relieves joint and muscle pain for many breast cancer patients taking estrogen-lowering drugs, according to a new study from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
Scientists have created a way to isolate neural stem cells - cells that give rise to all the cell types of the brain - from human brain tissue with unprecedented precision, an important step toward developing new treatments for conditions of the nervous system, like Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases and spinal cord injury.
A new study establishes a molecular link that bridges two rare inherited disorders and explains why these diseases result in genetic instability. The research, published by Cell Press in the December 24th issue of the journal Molecular Cell, may lead to a better understanding of the complex mechanisms that enable cells to repair damaged DNA.
