A daily dose of sodium bicarbonate baking soda, already used for baking, cleaning, acid indigestion, sunburn, and more slows the decline of kidney function in some patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD), reports an upcoming study in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN).
Allergy immunotherapy, generally referred to as allergy vaccinations or shots, reduce total health care costs in children with allergic rhinitis (hay fever) by one-third, and prescription costs by 16 percent, according to a study published this month in Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, the scientific journal of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI).
The Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) is pleased to see new legislation passed in Newfoundland and Labrador regulating certain health professions, including Medical Laboratory Technologists. The recently passed legislation, brought forward by the Ministry of Health and Community Services, directly addresses the recommendations made by Justice Margaret Cameron in the Commission of Inquiry on Hormone Receptor Testing Report.
These new findings, published online on the website of the journal Nature, point out that the harvest of stem cells for transplantation may be improved by timing it at the peak of their release.
Despite the importance of site investigators to the success of multicentre clinical trials, inadequate public information is available about their recruitment performance. In this week's PLoS Medicine, Rafael Dal-R- and colleagues argue that that sponsors should disclose the recruitment targets of all site investigators on ClinicalTrials.gov before a trial starts, as well as their final recruitment.
