University of Utah scientists developed a new kind of "molecular condom" to protect women from AIDS in Africa and other impoverished areas. Before sex, women would insert a vaginal gel that turns semisolid in the presence of semen, trapping AIDS virus particles in a microscopic mesh so they can't infect vaginal cells.
Having a new baby brings much joy to a new family. But for a family whose baby cries for hours on end, fusses through feedings, or has difficulty sleeping, the joy may be overshadowed by feelings of helplessness and frustration. The treatment of that infant - and that family - will impact the parent-child relationship for years to come.
The Competition Tribunal of South Africa agreed late last week to hear the complaint filed by individual South Africans and AIDS Healthcare Foundation, a nongovernmental organization that operates a free AIDS treatment clinic in Durban, that British drug maker GlaxoSmithKline illegally excessively priced AIDS drugs in violation of the South African Competition Act.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disorder worldwide, affecting as much as a quarter of humanity. It is characterized by fat accumulation in liver cells and may progress to inflammation, cirrhosis and liver failure.
