An oral targeted therapy gentle enough to be used by patients in their 70s or 80s is showing benefit in treating high-risk myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a pre-leukemic disorder that can progress to acute myelogenous leukemia (AML)
It was known till now that women were born with all the eggs they'll ever have. But now Harvard scientists have found that ovaries of young women harbor very rare stem cells capable of producing new eggs. The researchers feel that harnessing those stem cells might one day lead to better treatments for women left infertile because of disease or age.
With an estimated 494,000 new cases per year, breast cancer is by far the most common cancer amongst women across Europe. Particularly affected are women with dense breast tissue because of the difficultly it can cause when trying to detect cancer early using mammography.
Martin Schreiber, M.D., of Oregon Health & Science University, received a research grant worth nearly $700,000 from the National Trauma Institute to study a method that could more accurately determine how much blood-clot prevention medication to give critically ill or obese trauma patients.
