Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States, the area's largest not-for-profit health plan and care provider, announced today that its 2010 charitable contributions topped $35 million. Approximately $25 million was used for direct medical care and insurance coverage for uninsured and underserved residents of Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia, and another $10 million in grants, donations, and sponsorships went to organizations that support the health of the region.
A University of Colorado Cancer Center study published online this month in the journal Cell Cycle shows that breast cancer cell growth, motility and aggression is promoted by excess glucose, as experienced by patients with diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
Dartmouth researchers say lung cancer screening in the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) meets a commonly accepted standard for cost effectiveness as reported in the Nov. 6 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. This relatively new screening test uses annual low-dose CT scans to spot lung tumors early in individuals facing the highest risks of lung cancer due to age and smoking history.
Parkinson's disease is marked by the abnormal accumulation of α-synuclein and the early loss of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra region of the brain. A polymorphism in the promotor of α-synuclein gene known as NACP-Rep1 has been implicated as a risk factor for the disease.
