A metallic molecule being studied at Rice University begins to glow when bound to amyloid protein fibrils of the sort implicated in Alzheimer's disease. When triggered with ultraviolet light, the molecule glows much brighter, which enables real-time monitoring of amyloid fibrils as they aggregate in lab experiments.
Infection by virus cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common and major complication following kidney transplantation. Previous studies have related CMV infection with increased kidney transplant failure and reduced patient survival. However, a new study published in the American Journal of Physiology—Renal Physiology reports that the age of the donor and the recipient, not CMV infection, are more important factors in determining transplant success.
Health care professionals - doctors, hospitals and unionized health care workers - protested planned cuts to California's Medicaid system - Medi-Cal- at the state capitol on Tuesday. They say the governor's proposed budget could shutter a medical center and force doctors to stop taking patients on the program.
