A possible coronavirus pandemic could overwhelm the nation's hospitals and force doctors into difficult decisions about how to allocate limited resources. Yet, experts say, only a handful of states have done the work necessary to prepare for such worst-case scenarios.
A research team consisting of more than 60 collaborators in 26 countries has estimated the global death toll from the 2009 outbreak of the H1N1 virus to be 10 times higher than the World Health Organization's count, which was based on laboratory-confirmed cases of this flu. The study, which appears online in PLOS Medicine, suggests that the pandemic virus caused up to 203,000 respiratory deaths around the world.
According to researchers in New Zealand by leaving young infants sleeping unattended in car seats, even when they're brought indoors, can be a killer.
A diet designed to improve cardiovascular health is associated with improved cognitive maintenance in old age, say researchers. The finding comes from four large-scale, population-based studies that were reported on at the 2017 Alzheimer's Association International Conference (AAIC) in London.
