Collaborative research from the WALTHAM- Centre for Pet Nutrition and the University of Liverpool has shown that pregnant women who own dogs are more physically active than those who don't.
The skeleton is constantly being remodelled by the breakdown of old bone by cells called osteoclasts and the formation of new bone by cells called osteoblasts. This coordinated activity is essential for maintaining healthy bone. However, excessive osteoclast activity leads to bone destruction in skeletal diseases such as osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis and cancer metastases in bone. A family of signaling enzymes known as phosphatidylinositol 3-kinases control diverse cell functions but, up until now, little was known about the function of specific PI3K isoforms in osteoclasts.
Scientists are increasingly appreciating estrogen's role in brain health. Now for the first time, production of estrogen in the brain has been directly linked to the presence of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
The first results from the POISE biopsy sub-study have today confirmed that long-term treatment with obeticholic acid leads to the reversal or stabilization of fibrosis/cirrhosis in patients with primary biliary cholangitis who have had an incomplete response to ursodeoxycholic acid.
