Trials done in over 7,000 people prove conclusively that antibiotics could prevent deaths in intensive care units, but many hospitals aren't using them because of unproven fears that it might increase antibiotic resistance.
Dr. Gallagher further noted the VA's pain care challenge is magnified by a 90 percent injury survivor rate from these conflicts compared with only 40 percent in the Vietnam War. People with drug problems don't often come to mind as an underserved population regarding health care. Yet, because of their substance abuse issues, they often go without essential medical services, particularly when it comes to caring for their teeth and other oral tissues.
