Achieving widespread reductions in preventable hospital readmissions among Medicare beneficiaries may take longer than many health care professionals originally anticipated, according to researchers at Penn State, the Weill Cornell Medical College and the University of Pennsylvania.
Researchers at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital have shown that combining distal protection devices with the prophylactic use of the drug nicardipine is more effective at preventing life-threatening complications following a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) (angioplasty, stenting) on patients who have undergone previous bypass surgery than distal protection devices alone.
The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) monthly food price index for January is expected to be at a similar level to the record highs measured in December's index, Abdolreza Abbassian, an economist with the agency, said on Monday, Reuters reports. "FAO's expectation is that the January index would be very close or slightly below December," Abbassian said ahead of the release of FAO's monthly food index, which is due to be published on February 3.
Patients in an eastern academic medical center who received most of their nursing care from nurses with bachelor of science degrees had better care, fewer readmissions and shorter stays, according to a University of Michigan study.
