A groundbreaking study published Friday in the leading scientific journal, Cell, revealed that a team of investigators had successfully generated nerve cells using skin cells from four individuals with Rett syndrome. The study, funded in part by IRSF, was led by Dr. Alysson Muotri at the University of California, San Diego-a leading researcher in the stem cell field.
A novel study appearing as a preprint on the medRxiv server describes the performance of a new risk prediction model based on a wide range of patient variables for death and intensive care unit (ICU) admission.
Approximately 5,000 families (pregnant women, fathers and newborns) are being asked to take part in a new study called Étude 3-D (Découvrir, Développer, Devenir) that is aimed at understanding the effects of perinatal events on child development. The study is directed by Dr. William Fraser, Associate Director of Clinical Research at the CHU Sainte-Justine and professor of Medicine at the University of Montreal.
"This Thursday's commemoration of World AIDS Day marks a potential turning point in the fight against a global epidemic that has yet to be arrested," a Detroit Free Press editorial states.
The funding commitment was made in the Genetics White Paper, 'Our Inheritance, Our Future: Realising the potential of genetics in the NHS' and will help to ensure that those with cystic fibrosis benefit as soon as possible from the latest advances in genetic knowledge and technologies.
