Astellas Pharma Global Development, Inc., a subsidiary of Tokyo-based Astellas Pharma Inc., announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration designated isavuconazole as a Qualified Infectious Disease Product (QIDP) for the treatment of invasive mucormycosis (also known as zygomycosis), a life-threatening invasive fungal infection caused by certain emerging molds.
Tests of the experimental Ebola vaccine VSV-ZEBOV in over 7500 participants in Guinea suggest that the vaccine provides high protection against the disease as early as ten days after vaccination, in adults who have potentially been exposed to the virus by coming in close contact with a recently infected person.
In recent years, efforts to understand the workings of the mind have taken on new-found urgency. Not only are psychological and neurological disorders - from Alzheimer's disease and strokes to autism and anxiety - becoming more widespread, new tools and methods have emerged that allow scientists to explore the structure of, and activity within, the brain with greater granularity.
