"Knowledge is power" is an old saying. Another cliché warns, "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing." Researchers around the globe are working on turning microRNAs, over 5,000 of which already have been identified, into novel drugs for a wide range of applications, reports Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News (GEN). These noncoding single-stranded RNAs act through binding to complementary mRNA sequences, thus preventing their translation into protein or accelerating mRNA breakdown, according to the March 15 issue of GEN.
Pharmacyclics, Inc. today announced data from three Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia presentations at the American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting describing the Btk-selective inhibitor PCI-32765. Two presentations report preclinical data, and one presentation reports clinical data from a pooled analysis of 54 patients with CLL or Small Lymphocytic Lymphoma treated with PCI-32765.

Stys of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, University of Calgary, argues that while the majority of the medical research community currently approaches MS as an autoimmune disease (much like Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis), for which the trigger is the immune system attacking a particular part of the nervous system, the features of the disease are equally well explained by approaching MS as a neurodegenerative disease (such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's), which is followed by an immune reaction to damage.
