Harvard scientists have solved the long-standing mystery of how some insects form the germ cells - the cellular precursors to the eggs and sperm necessary for sexual reproduction - and the answer is shedding new light on the evolutionary origins of a gene that had long been thought to be critical to the process.
Individuals diagnosed with a brain arteriovenous malformation (BAVM) - an abnormal tangle of arteries and veins - are at increased risk of vessel rupture and bleeding that can cause permanent brain damage.
"In my line of work - improving the health and well-being of women and girls - 'empowerment' is both the end we seek and the means we use to get there," Melinda Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, writes in the foundation's "Impatient Optimists" blog.
A new discovery about the immune system may allow doctors to treat harmful inflammation that damages the brain in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. It might also let doctors save patients from the potentially deadly inflammation of sepsis, a full-body infection that kills a quarter-million Americans every year.
