Thirty-two years ago today, the world's first baby was born after in vitro fertilisation. However, the work that led to the birth of Louise Brown on 25 July 1978 had to be privately funded after the UK's Medical Research Council decided in 1971 against providing the Cambridge physiologist Robert Edwards and the Oldham gynaecologist Patrick Steptoe with long-term financial support. Today, an intriguing paper published in Europe's leading reproductive medicine journal Human Reproduction reveals for the first time the reasoning behind the MRC's much-criticised decision.
Canada Health Infoway (Infoway) announced today that Nightingale on Demand, a software product developed by Nightingale Informatix Corporation, (Nightingale), is the first product in Canada to successfully achieve electronic medical record (EMR) certification.
In response to the news that DePuy Orthopaedics, the manufacturer of an artificial hip system, issued a recall of its ASR product line after data indicated a higher than expected need for device replacement surgery five years after the initial procedure, Dr. Eugene S. Krauss, chairman of the Department of Orthopedics and director of the Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Institute at Glen Cove Hospital, a member of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, states,This news should not alarm anyone who has had their joint replacement performed at The Center for Joint Replacements at Glen Cove Hospital, Southside Hospital, or Peconic Bay Medical Center, as we are not using any of these components.
