Researchers from the Cognition and Brain Plasticity research group of the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute and the University of Barcelona, in collaboration with several hospitals, have discovered that an intellectually active lifestyle confers protection against neurodegeneration in people with Huntington's disease, delaying the onset of symptoms and loss of grey matter in the brain.
Moirai Orthopaedics, L.L.C., an orthopaedic implant development company based in Metairie, Louisiana, is pleased to announce it has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for its Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) application to initiate clinical study of the company's Pyrocarbon Implant Replacement (PIR) System.
The School of Medicine at the University of California, Riverside has been awarded a grant of $3 million over a two-year period from health care provider Kaiser Permanente Southern California to increase the size and reach of the school's existing "pipeline programs" - a continuum of student enrichment and academic support programs - and thus broaden and diversify the pool of students applying to medical school.
The budget proposal by Rep. Paul Ryan, House Budget chairman and a possible Republican contender for the White House in 2016, would repeal the health law but maintain its savings and taxes. Beginning with those who turn 65 in 2024, it would offer seniors a fixed amount to purchase a private plan or traditional fee for service Medicare.
The Washington Post: "In a letter to lawmakers, Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said the half-day meeting at Blair House would include the top Democratic and Republican congressional leaders and the ranking members in committees that deal with health care. Outlining the format for a session some Republicans have derided as little more than political theater, the Obama advisers said both parties would be allowed to invite four other members each to the discussion, to begin at 10 a.m. and be televised live" (Shear, 2/13).
