Covidien has announced it has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market its Leak Compensation software feature for the Puritan Bennett 840 ventilator system. This option provides continuous levels of mechanical ventilation to patients requiring respiratory support, regardless of the level of gas leakage that might occur in the circuit or past a patient interface device in the clinical setting.
A biomedical scientist at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada is exploring how ultrasound and light can be used to measure the effectiveness of cancer treatment in the early stages of therapy. By comparing high-frequency ultrasound patterns before and after treatment, doctors can potentially know within days if a tumor is responding to a prescribed therapy.
Professor Ludvig M. Sollid and his colleagues at the University of Oslo have found the cause of coeliac disease. To do so required really going into depth, right down to molecular level.
