While Florida has the second highest cancer burden in the nation, the state has only one National Cancer Institute. Successfully applying for NCI designation must include a commitment for additional funding from the state. The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is launching "We Tackle Cancer" bringing attention to the critical need for a second NCI.
Childhood obesity has become a significant health problem worldwide, but many parents don't know where to begin or how to help their child adopt a healthy lifestyle. At the opening session of the Pediatric Academic Societies annual meeting in Denver, Colo., experts in pediatric obesity prevention will discuss the science and the strategy behind understanding this epidemic and intervening upon it.
For people in wealthy countries, diarrhea is usually nothing more than an uncomfortable inconvenience for a few days. But for a poor child in a developing country, repeated bouts of diarrhea can lead to serious health consequences such as malnutrition, stunted growth and cognitive deficits.
