Orthovita, Inc., an orthobiologics and biosurgery company, notes that the August 10, 2010 online edition of The Lancet includes the largest peer-reviewed study to date demonstrating the efficacy of vertebroplasty in the treatment of acute vertebral compression fractures compared to conservative treatment.
A project at Queen's University Belfast aiming to develop a new method of making grafted blood vessels more resilient has been awarded a grant of over £145,000 by national charity Heart Research UK.
Implementation of a bundle for prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia in critically ill infants and children may lead to lower rates of VAP in these patients, according to an article in the June issue of Critical Care Nurse.
During pregnancy, the mother supplies the fetus with nutrients and oxygen via the placenta. If placental development is impaired, this may lead to growth disorders of the embryo or to life-threatening diseases of the mother such as preeclampsia, a serious condition involving high blood pressure and increased urinary protein excretion.
The removal of the enzyme Dnmt1 during oligodendrocyte progenitor cell (OPC) differentiation in the central nervous system resulted in inefficient myelin formation and neurological deterioration, including loss of control of bodily movements, in mice, according to a study conducted at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and published today in the medical journal Cell Reports. The results could lead to a new understanding of multiple sclerosis and other myelin disorders in humans.
