Researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center have developed biodegradable nanoparticles that can be used to genetically program immune cells to recognize and destroy cancer cells - while the immune cells are still inside the body.
A newly developed virus that introduces a blood pressure-lowering gene into cells and enables that gene to maintain blood pressure at healthy levels for four months promises to take gene therapy for the disorder a step closer to reality, said researchers at Baylor College of Medicine in a report released online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The BBSRC, with support from EPSRC, have committed £18M to fund 13 unique collaborative Networks in Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy (BBSRC NIBB).
Ed Gardella, a police officer for 31 years, thought he was pretty tough. But then the 70-year old Worcester, Mass. resident was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. "You never forget that moment, where you were that moment you were told you have cancer," said Gardella. "I never thought I was a particularly brave man, nor did I think I was a coward. I was a police officer, a chief of police, but this disease brings everyone to their knees — no one is tougher than cancer."
