Oxygen Biotherapeutics, Inc. today announced that the first patient has been enrolled in the company's Phase II-b, dose escalation, clinical trial in Switzerland for use of Oxycyte(TM) emulsion in traumatic brain injury (TBI). Oxycyte is the Company's perfluorocarbon (PFC) therapeutic oxygen carrier.
"The Centers for Disease Control have identified the culprits from a handful of fungal meningitis cases, and most often they've found a fungus called Exserohilum. This is a genus of molds. Its 19 species usually cause leaf diseases of grasses, including crops like corn and millet, and are not a danger to people or animals. But a few Exserohilum species can also infect us, though they do so very rarely.
It's about as long as the width of a human hair and only half that length across. So it's tiny - measured in millionths of a meter - and extremely tricky to manipulate. But the meiotic spindle plays so irresistibly important a role in separating our chromosomes during cell division that scientists are compelled to try to study it.
In a study published in this week's PLoS Medicine, "Francesca Celletti from the WHO, Geneva, Switzerland, and colleagues argue that a transformation in the scale-up of medical education in low- and middle-income countries is needed," according to a PLoS press release.
